Owner’s request

As part of an extensive 130+ m refit, the Owner asked for the games room and simulator equipment to be modernised. The existing setup was based on two simulators, each with Xbox consoles, a static racing seat with triple screen setups, and all installed in-room equipment was also visible (including all power supplies and cabling). Whilst the set up was functional, the Owner wanted to enhance the sense of ‘realism’ and introduce a ‘flight simulator’ mode as well as maintaining the ‘racing simulator’ for a variety of simulation programs and games.

Our challenges

  • Multifunctional simulator | The simulator needed to support both driving and flight modes, with all the equipment being easily available to seamlessly switch between the two modes.
  • Space considerations | The room dimensions were to remain the same, but the layout of the room could be utilised for ergonomic suitability.
  • Positioning of PC / server equipment | Simulators require high performance computing power, and multiple cables for the simulator, screens and accessories. The existing solution had an abundance of cabling and equipment positioned behind the screens, all of which were very visible and not to a ‘yacht standard’. This needed to be vastly improved to provide a ‘clean’ looking solution.

The solution

Leveraging on our specialist knowledge of the simulator market and superyacht refits generally, we engaged in detailed discussions with the Owner and the yacht’s crew to understand their priorities before designing conceptual solutions.

Once the goals and expectations were clearly understood, we designed and created a specification for the AV/IT contractor to work towards. We heavily focussed on collaborating with the project's AV integrator to ensure the best solution was provided. A solution from Sim-Lab B.V. was selected to meet the specification. Their modular designs allowed for customization for both simulator modes, had all the required accessories, and fitted within the space parameters available.

The chosen simulator was based on a ‘GT car’ setup, featuring a fully adjustable seat, hydraulic pedal box, steering wheel, and an optional ‘stick-shift’ module. Visual immersion was achieved with three 32” curved displays positioned at the correct distance and angles, with a 5.1 surround speaker system delivering realistic high quality audio.

To further enhance the simulator’s realism, FIA licensed D-BOX G5 actuator systems were installed on all four corners of the cockpit, replicating every bump on a track and even inflight turbulence !

For a ‘superyacht standard’ finish, we relocated the required high-performance PC (usually installed next to the simulator) to a dedicated, cooled rack outside the room. To ensure an uncompressed high bandwidth signal, instead of using extenders, the setup required optical display cables for connection to the triple screen setup, providing the required high frame rates for full visual immersion.

In line with the Owner’s request, we ensured the seat accessories were modular. This allowed for the addition of throttle levers and a side stick for flight simulation.

To future-proof the setup, we also included high-bandwidth USB connections between the simulator and PC, preparing it for potential VR headset integration as more racing game platforms evolve to support them.

Outcome

“We thought the original system was good until the 'Smart Guys' started designing the new simulator with the manufacturer."

The addition of the D-BOX system has really set the simulator apart from what was previously installed, and the ability to race against someone in the second simulator via a LAN has become a regularly enjoyed feature.

"We received pro-level systems developed for our space, and can honestly say the experience is 'night and day', it's an exhilarating experience sitting in that cockpit.”

Alongside games such as F1 2024 and Forza, professional simulator software from ‘iRacing’ has also been installed. This allows the Owner, their family and guests to experience a high degree of realism (it’s surprising how heavy the steering is on an F1 car!) and even compete in eSports tournaments. With the connectivity the yacht now has (as part of its wider AVIT refit), latency is low enough to make even online gaming and competitions genuinely viable.
